7 Days Happy Return

The autobiography chronicles Headmaster Jalal-ud-Din Ahmad 's odyssey from impoverished beginnings to his winning the Presidential award for the "Best Headmaster in Pakistan" in 1967, the inaugural year of the award. In the process, he recounts how he pursued secondary education through scholarships and "Jagir"(a resident-tutor who received foodand lodging in exchange of tutoring the children of the household), and continued his higher education with the help of scholarships and loans. In his professional life he faced and overcame daunting challenges posed by the powerful who wanted him to break the school rules in their favour. He dedicated his life to educating the mostly poor  students of Bangladesh. To him, the interest of his students was paramount.

Authors:
Fakhruddin Ahmed

Fakhruddin Ahmed is an illustrious diplomat from Bangladesh. He writes about his varied experiences highlighting some very interesting and fascinating events including deep insight concerning negotiations between India and Pakistan over Kashmir during the sixties. The vision of independent Bangladesh, freedom struggle and its trials and tribulations are all sharply focused. While tracing the evolution of Bangladesh foreign policy the author gives an account of the first four years of Bangladesh foreign policy which secured for Bangladesh a position of respect in the Third World. The final section of the book takes a very critical view of illegal seizure of power by the military junta led by General Ershad which blocked progress of the nation. Fakhruddin is strongly in favour of consensus management of economy and foreign policy and points out candidly that future economic development of Bangladesh is very much linked with the regional co-operation like SAARC and for Bangladesh there is no other viable option.
